About Our Cause - Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying Awareness Week: September 22rd-26th, 2014
The week is set to inspire prevention and intervention efforts across schools and homes of Pinellas County and beyond. A main feature of 'Cyberbullying Awareness Week 2014' is the hosting of our free events for Pinellas youth, schools, parents, and the community-at-large. These free events will bring awareness to cyberbullying and encourage youth and adult to use integrity when using technology devices.

The goal of 'Cyberbullying Awareness Week' is to see lower bullying incidents occur and LOWER SUICIDE RATES OF CHILDREN AND TEENS.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims. Cyberbullying creates real life struggles for children and families throughout the nation daily. Cyberbullying is a form of violence and is growing at a shocking rate.

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is a devastating reality of the digital world among children & youth. Cyberbullying is willful and repeated harm when a child or teen is embarrassed, harassed, or threatened by another child or teen using text or images through the Internet, interactive technologies, digital technologies, or mobile phones.

One of the biggest problems we have are our kids are afraid to speak up because they do not believe there is help. Through education & awareness, we can 'Be the Change.'

So what do we tell our children & teens to do if Cyberbullied?

STOP, BLOCK & TELL!
• Stop the conversation immediately; responding may make the situation worse.
